You can sell your car to a dealer, consign it with a dealer, trade it in for your next car, or sell it privately.
Selling to a dealer is usually fastest, while consignment or a private sale can take longer in exchange for a possibly higher price.
Your four options
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Sell to a dealer | You get an offer and the dealer buys the car. |
| Consign | A dealer lists and sells the car for you, and you are paid after it sells. Ask how the fee and timing work before you agree. |
| Trade in | The value of your car goes towards your next one. |
| Sell privately | You find the buyer yourself and handle the viewings, the paperwork and the payment. |
What you need if the car still has a loan
The buyer cannot take full ownership until the loan is settled. Ask your bank for a settlement letter that shows the balance. If you sell to JE Auto, we handle the settlement with your bank.
Inspection and transfer of ownership
- Settle any loan on the car, so the bank can release it.
- Complete the M.V.15 inspection, formerly known as B5, at a licensed inspection centre.
- If the buyer is taking a hire-purchase loan, the bank will usually also require a B7 inspection.
- Complete the transfer with JPJ.
Check the current steps and fees with JPJ, as these can change.
